Memory Lane

A permanent exhibition and environmental enhancement of the Hospital’s main corridors

Aims and Objectives

The objective of creating a Memory Lane within the hospital is threefold:

Arts Healthcare bullet To showcase some of the memorabilia from the three base hospitals to reflect their histories.
Arts Healthcare bullet To assist patients and visitors with way finding which in turn will lower their stress. This is part of the First Patient projects aims.
Arts Healthcare bullet To enhance the hospital environment for patients, visitors and staff.

The hallway of the Hospital is a confusing place with no visible markings that assist distressed patients and visitors finding their way about. Memory Lane will therefore use images, plaques, uniforms and other items from all three base hospitals. The works will be ordered chronologically, rather than by hospital. Much thought, consultation, and research has gone into the preparation of environmental project so it is important to set out some of the considerations in its conceptual development.

Considerations

A limited number of works set within a specified environment will be most beneficial. Too many images will lesson the impact of the experience as people become overwhelmed with too many images and stop looking.
Arts Healthcare bullet Although there are many images suitable for the theme (over 150), only works that are in reasonable condition should be exhibited.
Arts Healthcare bullet Due to the nature of activity down the hospital street the artworks should not have frames with too deep a profile as they might be damaged or harm a visitor who steps aside to avoid hospital activities such as refuse containers, patients on trolleys or other vehicles.
Arts Healthcare bullet Memory Lane should not infringe on the already established rotating exhibition space, but should be easily identified as a unique area.
Arts Healthcare bullet As this is a permanent exhibit the surrounding environment should enhance the theme.

Location

Memory Lane would begin in the Atrium at the double doors leading into Hospital Street and move down the corridor (toward the canteen) on the left side of the hallway, ending just beyond the entrance to dialysis. The artworks will run only along one side of the wall to assist in way finding; to avoid visitors from wandering from one side of the hallway to the other, thereby interrupting the flow of ‘hospital’ traffic; and to protect the deterioration of works due to prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
